The CAO Round 1 offers for 2024 were made today (Wednesday, 28 August) and MIC has two of the education programmes with the highest points in the country.
The College’s four-year B Ed in Education and Psychology (MI008) degree, the only one of its type in Ireland, not only remains a highly sought-after programme attracting the highest calibre of applicant but the 2024 CAO minimum points requirement of 590 makes it, along with MIC’s Bachelor of Education – International (MI004), the teacher education programme with the highest points in the country. MIC’s unique Bachelor of Education – International is a four-year, full-time, honours degree (Level 8) designed to qualify students to be primary teachers, with the addition of an international study component. The programme remains popular with the minimum points requirement at an impressive 565.
MIC’s Bachelor of Education – Primary Teaching (MI005) programme, which also equips graduates with the competence to teach at all levels of the primary school, has seen a slight points decrease from 497 in 2023 to 488 this year. Gaeltacht students seeking entry to the programme (MI006) will be required to meet a minimum CAO points requirement of 451. Up to 10% of places on the Bachelor of Education programme are reserved for applicants from the Gaeltacht who normally reside in an official Gaeltacht designated area, and whose normal language of the home is Irish.
The provision of Home Economics as a subject offering at MIC Thurles has been praised widely for serving to tackle a teacher supply issue in the discipline. This year the BA in Education, Home Economics, and Business Studies (MI022) has seen an increase in points from 509 in 2023 to 531 in 2024.
MIC’s two new Faculty of Arts undergraduate degrees, the BA in English Language and Literature (MI009), the only programme of its kind currently offered in Ireland, and the BA in Drama and English (MI010), the only programme of its type offered in Munster, have come in at 387 points and 378 points respectively. Both are four-year, full-time, honours degree (Level 8) programmes and are an exciting addition to MIC’s Faculty of Arts provision, which includes an established Bachelor of Arts (MI002) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (MI003).
