Three new publications from academics within the MIC's Department of English Language & Literature have been celebrated at a special event. Dr Kathryn Laing, Dr Ian Hickey and Dr Deirdre Flynn have published books in their respective research fields over the past academic year.
Hannah Lynch's Irish Girl Rebels: 'A Girl Revolutionist' and 'Marjory Maurice' by Dr Kathryn Laing was published by Edward Everett Root Publishers. The book sheds new light on Irish writer Hannah Lynch, who is writing at a particularly important part of the founding of the Irish nation state, and is especially important in studying the under-represented role played by women in the struggles of that period.
Seamus Heaney's Mythmaking is written by Dr Ian Hickey and Dr Ellen Howley (DCU) and is published by Routledge. This book looks at the centrality of myth in the writings of Seamus Heaney, adding an important dimension to an aspect of Heaney’s writing that has received comparatively little attention.
Austerity and Irish Women's Writing and Culture, 1980-2020 is written by Dr Deirdre Flynn and Dr Ciara L. Murphy (DKIT) and is published by Routledge. The book looks at the role of women during post Celtic-Tiger austerity, again, focusing on how very often their roles and voices are largely silenced in the economic and social clamour of the time.
Congratulating the authors on their publications was Professor Eugene O'Brien, Head of the Department of English Language and Literature, who said: "I am delighted to celebrate these books written and edited by my colleagues. One of the core functions of our work in third-level is the creation of new knowledge and I an very proud to see my three colleagues do this with such great style and with important academic publishers like Routledge and Edward Everett Root."
