Ag an gcomhdháil, cuirfear deiseanna ar fáil do theangeolaithe, do thaighdeoirí agus d’oideoirí san oideachas lán-Ghaeilge agus sa tumoideachas idirnáisiúnta araon machnamh criticiúil a dhéanamh ar thaighde i gcomhthéacs an tumoideachais agus an taighde sin a chomhroinnt. Soláthrófar deiseanna freisin leis na treochtaí nua i réimse síorathraitheach an tumoideachais a mhalartú agus a phlé. Cuirfear 3 eochairaitheasc, 3 shiompóisiam, 70 páipéar taighde agus 30 póstaer i láthair san ócáid dhá lá seo, lena n‑áirítear páipéir ó gach institiúid oiliúna múinteoirí ar oileán na hÉireann, agus ó eagraíochtaí agus ó ghníomhaireachtaí náisiúnta amhail an Chomhairle Mhúinteoireachta, Cumann Múinteoirí Éireann, an tSeirbhís um Fhorbairt Ghairmiúil do Mhúinteoirí, An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (COGG), agus Boird Oideachais agus Oiliúna Éireann. All-Ireland Research Conference on Immersion Education - Taking Stock and Moving Forward
The Third All-Ireland Research Conference on Immersion Education – Immersion Education: Taking Stock and Moving Forward, will take place at Mary Immaculate College on 10 and 11 June 2022. This conference will provide opportunities for linguists, researchers and Irish-medium immersion and immersion educators internationally, to critically reflect on and share research in the context of immersion education, providing the space to exchange and discuss new directions in the ever-evolving field of immersion education. Papers will be presented under the following strands: Immersion Pedagogy and Assessment, Leadership and Professional Learning, and Policy and Innovation in Bilingual/Multilingual Communities.
During the two-day event, three keynote addresses, three symposia, 70 research papers and 30 posters will be presented, including papers from all teacher education institutions from the island of Ireland, and from national organisations and agencies such as the Teaching Council, the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation, Professional Development Service for Teachers, An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (COGG) and Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI). Simultaneous translation of papers from Irish to English will also be provided.
Two leading immersion scholars in the field will provide conference keynotes. Roy Lyster, Professor Emeritus of Second Language Education at McGill University, Canada will discuss how to support sustained use of the immersion language in immersion programmes where English is the societally dominant language. In her keynote address, Diane (Dee) Tedick, Professor of Second Language Education at the University of Minnesota, USA, will highlight features of effective professional development deemed important for immersion contexts. An international expert panel will also discuss immersion teacher education from a range of international perspectives. Panel speakers include: Dr Ingeborg Birnie, Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland; Dr Kananinohea Maka'imoku, University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, USA; Dr Sanna Pakarinen, University of Åbo Akademi, Vaasa, Finland; and Kebir Colmenero Perez, University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, Basque Country.
According to Conference organiser Dr T.J. Ó Ceallaigh, Director of Taught Postgraduate Studies in Education, MIC: “The benefits of immersion education are indeed many but research has also exposed some of the challenges. There is a significant dearth of research on a wide variety of topics, in particular, immersion teacher development and sustained use of the immersion language where English is the societally dominant language. I hope that this conference will promote critical debate on these issues and nourish engagement and networks for innovation, integration and improvement in immersion and bilingual education”.
